The Barbolini winery

Barbolini is one of the oldest cellars of the Colli di Modena, in Formigine, an area renowned for the Lambrusco di Castelvetro. It is a 129 year long story. In fact, its foundation dates back to 1889. The ancient company in addition to the famous wine is also produced an exceptional traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena.

The origins and development of the company

It all began in 1889, a date that is reported on the labels of their proodotti. It was in fact this year that Egidio Barbolini, founded the Association of Grape Producers. But the real breakthrough was in 1966, when Armando Barbolini, liquidated all the members and founded the Cantina Barbolini, investing in the local vineyards of the area: Lambrusco Grasparossa, Malbo Gentile and Trebbiano Modenese. From which the must is obtained to make the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Dop.

Fifty years the company was very different. There were no machines that are there now, the grapes were crushed with the feet, the harvest was done only by hand and did not yet have the autoclave for refermentation. Slowly, slowly they managed to start up and working hard they made excellent products. Like the Lambrusco Grasparossa of Castelvetro Doc “Lancillotto”. But also the Lambrusco Grasparossa of Castelvetro Doc “Nero di Nero” and the Lambrusco di Modena Doc “Rosa della Molina” that are appreciated all over the world.

The cellar

Currently the Barbolini winery is in its fourth generation. Anna Barbolini, Mauro and Matteo Buffagni are today those who take care of all the stages of production. The thing we want to underline is the gradual transition to the organic cultivation of the 15 hectares of the winery. The work in the vineyard starts first of all by respecting the environment and typicality. Short pruning and thinning of the bunches, few treatments and a lot of attention among the rows. The cultivated vines are the classic ones: Lambrusco di Sorbara, Grasparossa di Castelvetro.

The wines

The Lambrusco wines from the Barbolini winery are intense and subtle, never over-laden, but set more to fineness and balance to keep the characteristics of Lambrusco’s freshness intact. Their wines are crisp, seducing for their great drinkability, centered on the character of the grape. The clay and limestone soils infuse a nice flavor, excellent to accompany the tasty Modenese cuisine.

An ancient company that has carried on a history of excellence in their field for over a hundred years. Do not miss the chance to taste their excellent products!

Good day,

Ilde!
