Colmello di Grotta

Today I am going to introduce you to the winery Colmello di Grotta! A small winery located in Farra d’Isonzo, with a very peculiar  situation, a road divides the winery in two on one side they are part of the DOP Collio  and on the other, of the  DOP Isonzo. Yes, 2 DOPs in one winery!  Managed “in pink” (by women) for three generations, I have been welcomed by Carlo Fossaluzza and Roberto Ottogalli; two different personalities, like the wines produced by the Colmello di Grotta winery.

Roberto very precise, pragmatic, concrete; a general supervisor who, almost like a symphonic orchestra master, with simple gestures makes us listen to elegant music. A tall man where is  “height” is as important as his good heart.

Carlo very talkative, outspoken, always ready to joke, who breaks in with a competence and knowledge above the ordinary. I can garante you will certainly find these characteristics in the Colmello di Grotta wines. Wines of important but also different character, united in the constant search for improvement and innovation, but, at the same time, preserving the utmost respect for the territory.

The Winery

The welcome is suggestive, you feel embraced by the Alps and massaged by the winds.

In this very small context I found myself at ease in the characteristic amphorae room where the wines rest in latest generation porous ceramic technical amphorae.

I closed my eyes for few moments and I thought I heard the wine breathe.

Next to the amphorae room there is a very intimate tasting room, with an old table, a fireplace (fogolar in Friulian) and a series of historical relics that my dad would love …..

The wines

The wines have marked notes of minerality and freshness driven by the climate and the soil the grapes grow on, but also hints of fresh flowers and red berries even as the wines age.

Let’s talk about the whites that are singular; the  Pinot Grigio Collio, straw yellow tending to onion skin, with a floral and fruity aroma. I also recommend to pay particular attention to the San Filip Isonzo wine which, of  of all whites is the one that best embodies the characteristics that I breathed. The 2016 vintage is a full, complex and spicy wine, pair it with barley with seasonal herbs and crunchy raw ham.

about the red wines; the one that  best represents Colmello is the Rondon Rosso Isonzo with a rich and full-bodied flavor. Ruby red with garnet reflections, with round and fruity notes, it goes well with red meats.

Have a look at the chat I had with Carlo and Roberto and choose one of the tasting kits we have thought for you

See you soon
