Airali Brut Sparkling Wine from Tenuta Carretta Winery
Airali Brut, produced by the renowned Tenuta Carretta, is an exceptional sparkling wine from the Alta Langa DOCG. This region, located in southern Piedmont, features hilly terrain extending to the Ligurian Apennines. Since the 1990s, vineyards of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have been planted here, thanks to a research project supported by major industry players and the Piedmont Region. This wine embodies the essence of the Metodo Classico, a bottle fermentation method practiced in Piedmont for almost two centuries.
The Winemaking
Airali Brut is named after the hillside of Cissone (CN), where the vineyards are located at about 600 meters altitude. The cuvée mainly consists of Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay added between 25% and 35%, depending on the vintage characteristics. The grapes are placed whole in the pneumatic press: the first-run must is discarded, while the must from subsequent pressings is fermented at 22°C to prepare the base wine. In March following the harvest, the wine is bottled for secondary fermentation and aged on lees for at least 30 months. During dégorgement, the liqueur d’expédition is added, which in the Pas Dosé style is limited to topping up with the same wine.
Tasting the wine by Tenuta Carretta
Airali Brut presents with a fine and persistent perlage, a hallmark of quality. The nose reveals elegant notes of white flowers, citrus, and dried fruit, with a slight yeast aroma from the extended lees aging. On the palate, it is fresh and mineral, with a well-balanced structure leading to a long and harmonious finish, marked by a pleasant salinity.
