The Friulano from Doro Princic Winery
The Friulano by Doro Princic is a white wine that perfectly embodies the winemaking tradition of the Collio region. Once known as Tocai, this wine had to change its name following a ruling by the European Court of Justice to avoid confusion with the Hungarian Tokaji. Friulano is produced from the eponymous grape variety, which was originally introduced to Friuli from Bordeaux in the 19th century and has adapted excellently to the Collio terroir. With a pleasantly rich structure, this wine represents a harmony of balance and intensity.
The Winemaking
The grapes for the Friulano by Doro Princic are cultivated in the 12 hectares of vineyards located in Pradis, between Cormons and Capriva del Friuli, in the heart of the Collio. These soils, known as “ponca” in Friulian, are rich in minerals and well-drained, making them ideal for producing quality white wines. The climate is favorable due to the protection of the Alps to the north and the influence of the Adriatic Sea, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. After gentle pressing, the must ferments in stainless steel tanks and matures on fine lees for about 6 months, preserving the wine’s aromatic characteristics.
Tasting the wine of the winery
In the glass, the Friulano presents a bright straw-yellow color. On the nose, it offers a rich and complex bouquet with notes of white fruit, citrus, aromatic herbs, and a slight balsamic hint. On the palate, it is enveloping and smooth, characterized by a vibrant iodine and mineral freshness, making it particularly persistent. The finish is savory with just the right freshness, making each sip a satisfying experience.
Food Pairings
The Friulano by Doro Princic is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with fish dishes, light appetizers, and fresh cheeses. Its structure and complexity also make it ideal with pasta dishes accompanied by vegetable or fish sauces. Served at a temperature of 10-12°C, this wine is perfect for enhancing quality lunches and dinners, offering a tasting experience that highlights the winemaking traditions of the Collio.
