The Malvasia Pètris from Venica & Venica Winery
The Malvasia “Pètris” from Cantina Venica & Venica is a refined and distinctive white wine, produced in the vineyards located in the prestigious Collio DOC area of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The name “Pètris” recalls the Friulian term for “stone,” “piere,” reflecting the rocky character of the soil in this area, which imparts a unique minerality to the wine. The history of Malvasia is linked to the Venetians, who introduced this grape variety to northeastern Italy through Dalmatia and Istria.
Journalist Carlo Cambi describes Malvasia “Pètris” as a “poetry of the land,” highlighting its ability to transform a simple pairing into a unique sensory experience.
The Winemaking
The Malvasia grapes are harvested and destemmed in mid-September. They are then macerated for about 20 hours at a controlled temperature of 10°/12°C. This process takes place in special containers that recycle fermentation carbon dioxide to protect the grapes from oxidation, thereby reducing the use of antioxidants. 60% of the wine is aged in large wooden barrels, while the remainder matures in steel containers. Bottling occurs in correspondence with the full moons of March and July.
Tasting the wine of the winery
Malvasia “Pètris” presents a brilliant golden yellow color. On the nose, intense fruity notes of apricot and herbal aromas like sage and thyme emerge, accompanied by a pronounced minerality. On the palate, the flavor of apricot returns, dominated by a mineral savoriness with a long aromatic persistence. The alcohol content is 13.50%.
Food Pairings
This wine is ideal for accompanying seafood dishes, such as fried fish, grilled sardines and anchovies, and seared tuna steak. It also pairs perfectly with seafood risotto, boneless rabbit roll with aromatic herbs, or baked turbot with potatoes and confit tomatoes. The recommended serving temperature is 12/13°C, and its aging potential exceeds 10 years.
