The Sottocastello Bianco from Vigna Traverso Winery is a wine of great class that embodies the elegance and refinement of the DOC Friuli Colli Orientali. Made from a blend of Chardonnay (80%) and Sauvignon (20%) grapes, this wine stands out as one of the winery’s flagship products, owing to its ability to best express the characteristics of the Friulian territory..
The Winemaking
The winemaking of Sottocastello Bianco begins with a manual harvest of the grapes in late September, when they reach full maturity. After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and undergo cold maceration in an environment saturated with inert gas. This is followed by soft pressing and static settling of the must. The clarified portion is transferred into barriques, where alcoholic fermentation takes place first, followed by malolactic fermentation. The barriques are topped up and undergo daily bâtonnage until March, followed by aging in wood. Finally, the wine is racked, filtered, and bottled, where it rests for an additional six months.
Tasting the wine of the winery
Sottocastello Bianco presents complex aromas reminiscent of ripe fruit, wildflowers, and oriental spices, all well blended with a delicate hint of toasted wood. On the palate, it surprises with its great structure and softness, offering an enveloping and persistent tasting experience. The vineyard’s soil, located in Prepotto near the Slovenian border, contributes finesse and elegance to the aromas due to its medium texture with a good percentage of rock fragments
