The wine Châteauneuf-du-Pape by Domaine de La Solitude
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine de La Solitude takes you on a journey through time, having been produced since the 17th century. This wine perfectly harmonizes the different terroirs, from Safres (a specific type of Miocene sandy soil) to rounded pebbles. While Safres provides finesse and elegance, the rounded pebbles bring strength and structure. It is primarily a blend of three varieties: Grenache noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, enriched by all 13 varieties authorized by the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in smaller proportions.
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a wine that promises to evolve over time, offering a sensory experience that reflects the richness of its terroir. If you’re looking for a wine that combines tradition and complexity, this might be the perfect choice for you.
The Winemaking
The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected on a sorting table to ensure the highest quality. Once destemmed and crushed, they fall by gravity into concrete tanks. A long maceration with gentle extractions allows for the development of velvety yet powerful tannins, characteristic of the winery’s wines. Ten percent of the wine is aged in oak barrels and demi-muids for 15 months, while the remaining 90% rests in concrete vats.
Tasting the wine by the winery
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape opens with an olfactory bouquet of garrigue and cistus flowers, enriched with notes of blackcurrant buds. On the palate, it presents as fresh and balanced, with aromas of cocoa and cherry leading to a long finish of licorice. This complex aromatic profile makes the tasting experience particularly rewarding and unforgettable.
Food Pairings
In its youth, this wine pairs perfectly with a 12-hour oven-cooked shoulder of lamb or roasted pigeon with porcini mushrooms. After five years, it is excellently suited to dishes like stew, “daube Provençale,” game, and a variety of cheeses. It is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature of 16-18 °C and to consume it within 15 years of the vintage to fully appreciate all its qualities.
THE WINERY
Domaine de La Solitude is one of the oldest wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with roots dating back to the 15th century. The Barberini family, originally from Tuscany, settled in the region in the 17th century, bringing with them a rich winemaking tradition. Over the centuries, the estate has maintained a strong commitment to producing high-quality wines and was one of the first to bottle its own wine in the Rhône Valley, well before the establishment of controlled designation of origin.
Today, the estate is managed by Florent Lançon, the eighth generation of the family, who has introduced biodynamic farming practices to respect and enhance the unique terroir of the estate. The vineyard spans 37 hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, divided into 33 plots that include a variety of soils, from safres to rounded pebbles. This diversity gives the wines complexity and depth, making Domaine de La Solitude a benchmark for wine enthusiasts seeking authentic expressions of the region.
