The Barolo Treturne from Podere Fogliati Winery
The Barolo Treturne is a prestigious wine produced by Podere Fogliati, a small family-run estate located in the heart of Barolo, Piedmont. Nestled between the towns of Monforte d’Alba and Castiglione Falletto, the winery benefits from a unique terroir that imparts distinctive characteristics to its wines. Barolo Treturne embodies the essence of Nebbiolo, crafted with an ideal blend of sun exposure and winemaking tradition, resulting in a refined and complex sensory experience.
The Winemaking
The production of Barolo Treturne adheres to traditional methods that honor the authentic character of the Nebbiolo grape. The grapes are meticulously handpicked, ensuring that only the finest clusters are selected for vinification. Following fermentation in steel tanks, the wine is aged in large oak casks (50 hl Stockinger) and cement vats for up to 24 months. This process not only softens the naturally robust tannins of Nebbiolo but also enriches the wine with deep, complex aromas. Further bottle aging allows the wine to reach optimal maturity, making it suitable for long-term aging.
Tasting the wine
Barolo Treturne presents a deep garnet color with bright ruby edges, indicative of its youth and freshness. On the nose, it offers a perfumed and intensely fragrant bouquet of violet and rose petals mingled with ripe wild cherry and raspberry compote. Underlying hints of forest floor, earthy truffle, and fine baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg are complemented by subtle notes of tobacco and dark cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, opening with lush red-berry fruit—raspberry, marasca cherry, and cassis—that transitions into savory notes of truffle and forest floor. Seamless, finely-woven tannins provide structure, while fresh, lively acidity ensures a balanced finish.
Food Pairings
Barolo Treturne is an ideal companion for rich and structured dishes. It pairs perfectly with red meats, game, and aged cheeses, enhancing their flavors with its complex aromatic profile. It is particularly well-suited for traditional Piedmontese dishes, such as braised beef in Barolo wine or Alba white truffle. For a more refined tasting experience, it can be enjoyed with high-quality dark chocolate, which highlights its spicy and fruity notes.
