The wine Chardonnay Karina by Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars
The Chardonnay Karia is an elegant white wine produced by the prestigious Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, located in the renowned Napa Valley wine region. This wine embodies the refined winemaking art of the cellar, known for its attention to detail and commitment to excellence. The Karia is an expression of the unique terroir of Napa Valley, where the favorable climate and fertile soils allow the Chardonnay grape to develop extraordinary characteristics.
The Winemaking
The winemaking process for Karia Chardonnay is meticulous, beginning with the manual harvest of grapes in the cool morning hours. This technique ensures that the clusters retain their freshness and integrity. After harvesting, the grapes are whole-cluster pressed to extract a pure and fragrant must. Fermentation occurs 92% in barrels and 8% in stainless steel tanks, ensuring a balance between roundness and freshness. A moderate malolactic fermentation, limited to 13%, and an eight-month aging in French oak barrels add complexity and structure to the wine. The result is a Chardonnay that combines elegance and depth.
Tasting the wine by the winery
The Karia Chardonnay presents a bright appearance with a pale yellow hue accented by straw reflections. On the nose, the wine offers a rich aromatic bouquet with notes of white peach, melon, and citrus such as lemon and lime. These fragrances are enriched by hints of crème brûlée, vanilla, and a touch of clove. On the palate, the Karia is medium-bodied, with a velvety and creamy texture. The citrus vivacity is perfectly balanced with honeysuckle notes, leading to a persistent finish marked by a subtle oak note.
Food Pairings
The Karia Chardonnay pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes due to its versatility and complexity. It is ideal with grilled fish served with lemon butter, roasted poultry in cream sauce and mushrooms, or vegetable risottos. Additionally, it enhances soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert and slightly spicy Asian dishes. This wine is perfect to enjoy in its youth to appreciate its vibrant freshness, but it also has the structure to age favorably in the cellar for several years, offering an enriched tasting experience over time.
THE WINERY
Founded in 1970 by Warren and Barbara Winiarski, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is one of the most prestigious wineries in Napa Valley. Its international fame was solidified in 1976 when their 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon received top honors in the red wine category during the historic blind tasting known as the “Judgment of Paris,” surpassing renowned Bordeaux wines. This triumph marked a turning point for the American wine industry, placing Napa Valley on the global wine map.
Today, the winery is renowned for producing high-quality wines, particularly its Cabernet Sauvignons from the S.L.V. and FAY vineyards. These vineyards, located in the heart of the Stags Leap District, benefit from a unique terroir that imparts a balance of richness and elegance, softness and structure to the wines. The winery offers top-tier tasting experiences at the FAY Outlook & Visitor Center, designed by Spanish architect Javier Barba, which provides panoramic views of the vineyards and the majestic Palisades.
