The Pinot Gris Clos Saint Urbain from the Zind Humbrecht winery
The Pinot Gris Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain represents a true treasure of Alsace, the result of the passionate work of the team at Zind Humbrecht. This wine, made entirely from Pinot Gris grapes, offers a unique sensory experience, fully expressing the distinctive character of its terroir and promising extraordinary aging potential.
The Winemaking
Pinot Gris Clos Saint Urbain is crafted from the eponymous grapes grown within the boundaries of the Grand Cru of Rangen. Just over five hectares of south-facing land, characterized by a subsoil predominantly composed of rock and volcanic sediments, create an ideal environment for grape growth. The grapes are harvested at an advanced stage of ripeness, when they are affected by noble rot. Once in the winery, the grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation with the help of indigenous yeasts in large, untoasted oak barrels. After fermentation, the wine is aged on fine lees for several months until bottling.
Tasting the Pinot Gris Grand Cru
It has a pale golden yellow color that invites a tasting rich in complexity. On the nose, it offers an intense bouquet of smoky aromas, burnt peat, spices, green tea, and vegetable oils, creating an enveloping olfactory experience. On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be powerful, dense, and with an almost oily quality, supported by a balanced structure and a dry finish characterized by extraordinary salty acidity. The length of the sip is exceptional, confirming the distinctive character of this wine, capable of evolving and maturing over time.
Food Pairings
This Pinot Gris pairs beautifully with fish and seafood dishes, enhancing fresh and delicate flavors. It is also an excellent choice to accompany white meats and flavorful vegetarian dishes. Additionally, its structure and acidity make it ideal with soft cheeses and spicy dishes, allowing it to balance and elevate every gastronomic element. A wine that promises to enrich every culinary experience.
