The Merlot from Villa Russiz Winery
The Merlot from Villa Russiz winery is a wine that embodies the winemaking tradition of Friuli, expressing the best characteristics of the territory and the attention to quality that distinguishes this establishment. Located in a hilly area with southern exposure on marly or marl-clay soils, this wine represents a perfect balance between elegance and complexity. Each bottle reflects the dedication and care employed at every stage of the production process.
The Winemaking
The Merlot grapes are hand-harvested at the beginning of October, selecting only the bunches that have reached optimal ripeness. In the winery, the berries are separated from the stems and undergo fermentation and maceration for about 15 days. After racking, the wine matures for 12-15 months in small oak barrels, an essential step that contributes to its complex and smooth structure. The final blend takes place in steel tanks, followed by a further 5 months of bottle aging, ensuring a finished product of excellent quality.
Tasting the wine of the winery
Visually, the Merlot from Villa Russiz presents a ruby red color and offers a slightly herbaceous aroma and flavor, enriched with tobacco notes. The wine’s structure is complex and smooth, characterized by great balance. Over time, the wine significantly refines, developing a wide and refined bouquet that continues to evolve.
Food Pairings
This Merlot is particularly suited to accompany roasted white meats, such as rooster, and red meats, such as roast beef. It is also ideal for boiled meats, including traditional ones, and for braised meats, enhancing the flavors of the dishes thanks to its complexity and balance. Its versatility makes it an excellent companion for a wide range of culinary preparations, making every meal a unique tasting experience.
THE WINERY

During World War I, from 1915 to 1918, Villa Russiz became a military hospital. In 1964, it became part of the Collio Consortium, obtaining DOC status in 1968. Between 1989 and 2006, the Cru line dedicated to Theodor De La Tour was launched, achieving significant international recognition.
