Today, we take you to Oslavia, a small patch of land in the Collio Friulano, about 200 meters from the border with Slovenia. Originally part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this territory became Italian to all intents and purposes after the end of the First World War,

Our journey led us to the Fiegl winery, a family-run establishment that has been tending to vineyards since 1782. Originating from Austria, the family’s winemaking legacy found a new home in Oslavia, marking the beginning of a unique chapter in their history.

Ribolla Gialla Producers Association

In 2010, the winery founded the Ribolla Gialla Producers Association together with six other wineries in the area. This association aims to expand the awareness of the uniqueness and quality of Ribolla Gialla, an indigenous Friulian wine that is particularly interesting in this area. In addition to the wine, the association has entered into collaborations to expand and spread the word of Ribolla Gialla with other realities; among the various collaborations, there is the one with the Pagura distillery, which uses the winery pomace to produce the Ribolla Gialla grappa; a minimal production that never exceeds 500 bottles, all strictly numbered.

The wines

The winery is undoubtedly known for the quality of its white wines because Oslavia is particularly suited to producing white wines, but its reds are also noteworthy and known internationally. For example, there is the Merlot Leopold, so called because it is dedicated to Leopold Figl, the Austrian chancellor who signed the treaty between NATO and the Soviets. This wine ages for several years in the barrel, becoming an elegant and complex wine that remains imprinted.

Listen to our chat in the winery, and if you pass by Oslavia, be sure to stop and visit the company.
